Ever notice how bad emotions feel so heavy, but happy emotions feel light? What's even more wild is how these emotions can swing from one to another and leave you unfocused.

In this episode of the Art of Likability, we will discuss a way to control your thoughts so you can focus on your mission.

Good Vibes Only?

For heavy, weighty, and bad vibes:

"That hit me like a pile of bricks..."

"...a cross to bear..."

And when you're feeling good:

"I feel as free as a bird!"

"It's like a huge weight was taken off my chest!"

There's a great book (Metaphors We Live By) that talks about the connotations and metaphors that come with our language, which covers many other jewels like this.

What's truly wild is how intoxicating these emotions are and how they can swing like a pendulum from one extreme to another, and then you feel like you're not in control of yourself.

Shift your thinking: You can control your thoughts instead!

How To Control Your Thoughts!

Recently, I've been taking cold showers for both health reasons and to control my thoughts.

These are tough, tough, tough to get used to! Don't get me wrong, I love taking warm showers just like everyone else. So there I am standing in the showers, telling myself anything I can to avoid taking a cold shower:

"Man, I've taken cold showers before, I've done those before...what do I have to prove? Plus, I really like the warm showers..."

Then, I remember that I am in control of my thoughts. I repeat the following to myself:

"I control my thoughts. My thoughts don't control me."

"I control my thoughts. My thoughts don't control me."

"I CONTROL MY THOUGHTS. MY THOUGHTS DON'T CONTROL ME."

"I CONTROL MY THOUGHTS. MY THOUGHTS DON'T CONTROL ME."

"I CONTROL MY THOUGHTS. MY THOUGHTS DON'T CONTROL ME."

Then I set that knob to cold.

What works for me? Having this mantra works for me. Repeating this mantra works for me.

When you repeat it over and over again, you'll eventually come to believe it. And then....you'll take the jump!
